A relative gives a gift to a child. One kid shares their snack with another kid. A little girl allows another little girl to go first. An adult compliments a little boy on his shirt. And then a parent asks the child, “What do you say?” A simple prompt. A not-so-subtle reminder. A gentle cue for the child to say, “Thank you.” No one ever asks that question of adults. At some point we reach an age where it would be considered inappropriate for someone to ask that question. But we never outgrow the need to be grateful. And we sometimes forget to be grateful. So, I’ll ask, what do you say?
